Billy Zero (WTMD 89.7 - Program Director), Krista Vilinskis (Tinderbox) and Abby White (American Songwriter - Music Critic)
The term ‘press’ can mean a few different things. Press can be a review of your CD, an honorable mention regarding an upcoming show, a review of your live performance, or a feature story about your music and band. The type of press your band obtains obviously depends largely on how much the music critic likes your music.
There are a couple different levels of press to pursue and Tinderbox can be hired for any of the following: obtaining local press for a CD release date such as your hometown’s daily, weekly or college papers, receiving regional press for out of town touring such as statewide papers and/or national publications like weekly, monthly or bi-monthly music magazines and online reviews. Most media publications require a copy of your current physical disc or to be digitally delivered with a up-to-date 1 sheet.
What is a 1 sheet? Click below to view some examples.
The Umbrella Sequence national press onesheet here.
It’s best to keep your 1 sheet brief and to the point as less text is more. You don’t want to give them too much information. The shorter your text is the more chance you have of them actually reading it. Keep in mind how many CD’s they receive in a day, let alone a week. Write a short bio and bullet point the facts about your band. Be sure to utilize all the important information that your band has accomplished to date such as positive press reviews, any radio airplay, music placements in national television shows or commercials, and list your contact or label's information with all of your websites. Don't forget to list all band members and instrumentation along with your track listing and recommenced tracks.
There is no need to spend a lot of money on the design of your 1 sheet or promo kit packaging. You can send your CD and 1 sheet loose in an envelope. Remember it’s about the music.
If you’re interested in Tinderbox pursuing press on your behalf please submit your CD and 1 sheet to us. If we feel we can really do something for you we will let you know. Good press isn’t easy to obtain so if we are passionate about your music chances are we will be able to obtain press for you.
Our publicist has over 16 years of experience and has established great relationships with many major music publications and critics over the years that can help to get your CD listened to more quickly and considered for review.
We have received press for artists in many national publications such as Billboard, Magnet, BLURT, Acoustic Guitar World, The Big-Takeover, Amplifier, Performing Songwriter, Spin, No Depression and Playback:STL, Paste to name a few and weekly’s including Village Voice, The Onion, OC Weekly, New York Press, City Pages and many others. Tinderbox also works closely with several online sites including NPR's All Songs Considered, Rollingstone.com, Pop Matters, Daytrotter.com, MTV.com, Culturebully.com, Delusions of Adequacy, and many other great indie review sites.
Please see the submission page on how to be considering for press.
